Madmundo.tv - Mary Robinson: Decent Work as a Right?

Introduced into the public sphere by the International Labour Organisation in 1999, the right to Decent Work is designed to guarantee productive work in which rights are protected, which generates an adequate income, with adequate social protection (Juan Somavia, ILO Director-General). Fundamental to poverty eradication efforts, the right to Decent Work is at the heart of the "Every Human has Rights" campaign, which was initiated by "The Elders", a group of prominent political figures on the international scene, and led this fall by Mary Robinson, former Irish president and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. By following interventions, local investigations, and Mary Robinson's meetings both with the world's most important decision-makers and with affected populations, as well as through our own investigations, this Madmundo aims to allow everyone to develop a real awareness of the notion of Decent Work.

01. Decent Work as a Right

Internationally renowned figures, such as Nelson Mandela, Graça Machel, Mary Robinson, Desmond Tutu, Kofi Annan, Ela Bhatt, Lakdhdar Brahimi, Gro Brundtland, Jimmy Carter, Fernando H. Cardoso, Muhammad Yunus and Aung San Suu Kyi, who have come together within the group « The Elders », have launched the « Every Human Has Rights » campaign to promote human rights. They have rallied together, not in order to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights (December 10th 2008), but in order to revive and give new meaning to this Declaration.
Watch the video

04. Monrovia

On September 8th and 9th, we accompanied Mary Robinson to Liberia on her field visit of a concrete decent work program put in place by the ILO to create jobs in order to revive the national economy and increase local living standards. In this visit, Mary Robinson found an opportunity to measure the extent of the impact of these programs on the local population.
Watch the video

05. Decent Work Forum

A two days forum took place in Monrovia, which brought together NGOs, corporate managers and representatives of several African countries desirous of promoting decent work throughout the continent. Making decent work a concrete reality is a matter of urgency, in Liberia as much as in the rest of Africa.
Watch the video
