Madmundo.tv - Ibrahima: How do we beat hunger?

Ibrahim Diop, a Senegalese farmer, lives near Thies, 60 km south-east of Dakar. Since the opening up of the Senegalese market chickens, Ibrahim has to sell his chickens at a price lower than their cost. This is just one example of the situation facing all poultry farmers in West Africa, suffering the full brunt of market liberalisation. For developing countries, agriculture means better access to future development.

Ibrahim questions the politics of international trade and their impact on the development of least developed countries.

02. Demonstration in Yaounde

While food riots spread across the planet and Africa in particular, this second episode of the investigation for Ibrahim was filmed in Cameroon, where there have been 40 deaths in recent weeks.

But this short film by José Reynes was filmed two years ago. And it shows that the signs were already there before the riders of the apocalypse came. It was the first demonstration by agricultural producers in Cameroon in twenty years. They are farmers, poultry farmers; and they are demanding the end of imports of subsidised frozen chickens from the European Union which are bankrupting them.

And who is there by their side? José Bové.
Watch the video

03a. Jacques Diouf answers Ibrahim

Jacques Diouf, director general of the FAO (UN Organisation for Food and Agriculture) since 1993, wanted to engage with the anxieties of Ibrahima Diop. Jacques Diouf from Senegal is a compatriot of Ibrahima Diop. But you’ll see that this farmer from Thiès, near Dakar, comes up with the same analysis of the food crisis as Jacques Diouf and the FAO…
Jacques Diouf welcomed madmundo in Brussels on 27 May, on the eve of the summit in Rome on June, the 3rd…
He responds to Ibrahima and also to the question of finding sustainable solutions in the face of the current crisis. Apart from the immediate humanitarian response, what is wrong with a world that has let agriculture go fallow? Or at least that can no longer provide for the needs of the people?
Watch the video

04. Mega Food Parks: a new form of Neo-Colonialism?

As a response to the Food Crisis, one solution suggested by various
countries and some agro-business corporations sound scary even to the United
Nations. "It’s a form of neo-colonialism" says the FAO (Food and Agriculture
Organisation). The Wall Street Journal itself blew the whistle. So what are we talking about? It’s called the “Mega Food Park”.

The purpose of Mega Food Parks is for rich countries such as Saudi Arabia or China, or rich companies, to secure food imports from poor countries such as Indonesia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Mongolia, Pakistan, India and Ukraine. But what they are proposing is an extraordinary deal.

Because while local people would still be mal-nourished or starving, the whole
production of these "Mega Food Parks" would be reserved entirely for export. And the land itself, sometimes the size of an entire province, would become the
property of those public or private foreign investors.

Madmundo's India correspondents, Neelima Mathur and Jaideep Hardikar,
investigated the birth of a mega food park in the Maharashtra province.
Watch the video
